I love overnight oats chocolate with peanut butter for the simplicity and flavor it brings to the kitchen. Sometimes all we want a delicious, easy breakfast. Am I right?

I mean, I’m not always my high-energy self first thing in the morning. So, knowing that breakfast is ready can be a huge relief! Besides, I’m a huge fan of the flavors of chocolate and peanut butter.

For example, there’s my Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Shake. Amazing is the word that comes to mind! Of course, we love having our Green Smoothies, too.

Here’s the important thing to note, you can have this delicious recipe any time of day — even for dessert. It’s just that good! I love having flexibility in a recipe like that.

What Are Overnight Oats?

Overnight oatmeal is a healthy, simple make-ahead breakfast recipe. Technically a raw oatmeal recipe because it’s simply serving soaked oatmeal. It’s amazing how tender the oatmeal becomes after it’s soaked.

What Makes This Recipe Shine?

  • Adding vegan yogurt to overnight keeps this recipe dairy-free while adding creamy goodness to every bite
  • Cocoa powder adds a rich, chocolate flavor
  • Peanut butter powder is made from defatted peanuts, just like cocoa powder, and adds tasty peanut butter flavor to these oats
  • Topping each serving with a drizzle of peanut butter and chocolate chips adds visual panache and flavor!

Key Ingredients

You can find the full printable recipe, including ingredient quantities, below. But first, here are some explanations of ingredients and steps to help you make this recipe perfect every time.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need for this recipe, including substitution ideas:

  • Peanut butter powder — You can use your favorite peanut butter powder here, such as PB2
  • Vegan yogurt — I like using plain vegan yogurt, which I can find at health food stores. There are so many options these days!
  • Almond milk — Any plant-based milk will do here, such as soy or almond milk. If yours is not vanilla-flavored, add a bit of vanilla to the oatmeal sauce.
  • Rolled oats — This is also referred to as old-fashioned oats. You can use instant oats too.
  • Cocoa powder — Either natural or dutch-process cocoa powder will work.
  • Sweetener — Use your favorite sweeteners, such as maple syrup, agave nectar, or even a zero-calorie sweetener, which is what I’m recommending.
  • Chocolate Chips — We’ll add a few dairy-free chocolate chips to the mix to keep the chocolate flavor front of mind.
  • Peanut butter — Adding a drizzle of peanut butter on top brings out the best flavors in this tasty dish.

What Oats are Best for Overnight Oats?

There are three main types of oats that are used in baking: 1) Steel Cut, 2) Rolled or Old-fashioned, and 3) Instant. For overnight oats, I don’t recommend using steel-cut oats because they’re too dense to soften without cooking. Choosing rolled oats will give you a chewier texture and takes longer to soften. Instant oats will be less chewy and will soften sooner. I prefer rolled oats for overnight oats, but it’s a matter of personal preference.

How to Make Chocolate Peanut Butter Overnight Oats

  1. Make the sauce by stirring together peanut butter powder, vegan yogurt, and almond milk until smooth. Scoot ingredients to one side of the bowl.
  2. Stir the oats, cocoa powder, and sweetener in the other half of the bowl.
  3. Gradually incorporate the yogurt mixture in with the oat mixture.
  4. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least an hour, up to overnight.
  5. To serve, transfer to individual serving containers. Top each serving with chocolate chips and a drizzle of peanut butter.

Here is a more detailed step-by-step guide:

Step One: Prepare the Sauce

Pour vegan protein powder, peanut butter powder, plain vegan yogurt, and plant-based milk in a bowl.

I’m using peanut butter powder to purposefully here. It adds both texture and protein, which can help you stay full longer.

Marly’s Tips

Add a mashed banana to the yogurt sauce to transform this very recipe into a chocolate peanut butter banana overnight oats. It’s amazing!

Step Two: Prepare the Oats

Either use a separate bowl or scoot the yogurt mixture to the side of a bowl and prepare the oats in the other half.

Step Three: Combine Ingredients

Stir the peanut butter chocolate oatmeal mixture with the yogurt mixture and give it a good stir, to make sure all the oats are coated.

Cover and place in the fridge for at least an hour or up to overnight. After a little time to soak, the oatmeal gets soft and creamy.

Frequently-Asked Questions

Are overnight oats healthy?

Overnight oats are healthy because the primary ingredient is oatmeal. That matters because oats are a gluten-free grain full of minerals and other important phytonutrients, such as fiber. Including oats in your diet offers a lot of nutrition.

Is oatmeal good for weight loss?

Oatmeal recipes have lots of fiber which can help keep you feeling fuller for longer and can help with improved digestion as well. Including oatmeal in your diet can be good for weight loss because it helps you sustain the feeling of being full for a longer period of time.

Do you eat overnight oats hot or cold?

I prefer to eat chocolate overnight oatmeal cold, however, they can be heated up in the microwave or even stovetop if you prefer them warm. We sometimes will eat overnight oats for dessert (they’re that tasty!) and so serving them cold makes them taste almost like a pudding.

More Oatmeal Recipes

There are other ways besides overnight oatmeal to include oatmeal in your diet, whether for dinner, lunch, or breakfast. For example, here are some of my favorite recipes that use oatmeal:
