Vegan Graham Cracker Crust

This is the perfect buttery Vegan Graham Cracker Crust recipe. Learn how to make this homemade crust with only 3 ingredients and use it to make your favorite pies vegan, such as creamy chocolate, banana, and more.

The best way to fill a graham cracker crust is with this tasty vegan cheesecake filling with blueberry sauce on top.

A graham cracker crust is in a glass pie pan. There are graham crackers and vegan butter around it.

Did you know you can buy one of those pre-made graham cracker crusts at the store and they’re vegan? At least most of them are. These are what I refer to as accidentally vegan products. And there’s no judgment if you prefer this.

However, making a vegan graham cracker crust is so simple, you may never need to buy one of those pre-made crusts again. The difference between homemade and store-bought is undeniable. Homemade is always the best!

The thing is, your homemade vegan graham cracker crust will be crunchy in all the right places, while also buttery, and more flavorful, too. And you won’t believe that you can achieve all this with only 3 ingredients.

What Makes This Recipe Shine?

  • Adding sugar creates a crispy crust that doesn’t crumble as much and is also undeniably delicious
  • The right amount of vegan butter makes a buttery crust that holds together well after baking
  • Baking the crust for a few minutes creates a crispy crust, perfect for your next pie

Ingredients

You can find the full printable recipe, including ingredient quantities, below. But first, here are some explanations of ingredients and steps to help you make this recipe perfect every time.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

  • Graham crackers — To find vegan graham crackers, look at the nutrition labels, and avoid ingredients such as dairy. Some strict vegans avoid using honey too.
  • Sugar — You can use either granulated or brown sugar for this pie crust
  • Vegan Butter — Earth Balance buttery sticks work great. If you have trouble finding it you can make a plant-based butter at home.

To make this graham cracker crust with coconut oil, simply substitute refined coconut oil for the vegan butter.

How to Make a Vegan Graham Cracker Crust

Here’s a synopsis of the steps to make this vegan graham cracker pie crust:

  1. Create Graham Cracker Crumbs — break the graham crackers down into crumbs (see my tips below for how to do that two ways)
  2. Add Butter and Sugar — Add the melted vegan butter and sugar to the crumbs
  3. Press and Bake — Press the mixture into a pie pan and bake for 8 to 10 minutes.
  4. Fill, Chill, and Serve — Once the crust cools, fill it with a creamy filling, refrigerate the pie to let the filling set, and then serve!

Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow this visual guide to make this vegan graham cracker crust perfect every time.

Step One: Create Graham Cracker Crumbs

Place the vegan graham crackers in a food processor and pulse until a sandy texture forms.

Graham crackers are in the bottom of a food processor bowl.

If you don’t have a food processor, place graham crackers in a plastic bag and use a rolling pin to press and roll over the graham crackers, breaking them into crumbs.

Step Two: Add Vegan Butter

Add the vegan butter and pulse a few times to combine. Then add the sugar and pulse again.

A hand holds a bowl of melted butter and is pouring it into a food processor full of crumbs.

Step Three: Press Into a Pan and Bake

Press this mixture into a pie pan. Using the back of a drinking glass can help press the mixture evenly across the bottom and sides of the pie pan.

A hand holds a glass, using it to press crumbs into a pie pan.

Here, the most common uses are either a springform pan (for a vegan cheesecake) or a 9-inch pie pan. However, you can make individual pies by pressing graham cracker crusts into muffin pans. Get creative!

Step Four: Fill and Serve

Once your vegan graham cracker crust cools, you’re ready to fill it with your favorite vegan pie filling. One of my favorite go-to chocolate cream pies involves only two ingredients:

  • 2 cups dairy-free chocolate chips
  • 1 can full-fat coconut milk

Pour these two into a microwave-safe dish (like a pyrex measuring cup) and microwave for one minute. Then allow the mixture to sit until the chocolate chips have melted. Stir it all together and pour it into the graham cracker crust. Refrigerate it for 2 to 4 hours and you’ll experience a deliciously creamy vegan chocolate pie.

Frequently-Asked Questions

Are graham crackers vegan?

Many graham crackers are not vegan, because they’re either made with dairy or honey (an ingredient strict vegans eschew). However, read the labels and you will find some graham crackers, such as Nabisco Original Grahams. You can also look for organic graham crackers (in health food stores or online), many of which are vegan as well.

How do you keep a graham cracker crust from getting soggy?

Blind baking your graham cracker crust will help keep it crispy and prevent it from getting soggy once filled with a creamy pie filling.

Why is my graham cracker crust crumbly?

If your graham cracker crust is crumbly, it probably needs more butter, sugar, or a combination of the two. It’s tempting to leave the sugar out of a graham cracker crust, noting there’s sugar in the crackers themselves. However, adding sugar helps bind the crumbs together as the crust cools after baking. Additionally, using brown sugar can create a more tender crust, too.

Hi does it matter what brand crumbs you use? I know some brands use different ingredients in their crumbs.
