Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons raw almonds
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 cups mixed baby greens spinach, kale, and chard
  • 1 - 3 teaspoons zest from one orange*
  • juice from one orange
  • ¼ cup chopped carrots
  • 1 apple washed, core removed, cut into quarters
  • 1 - 2 tablespoons ground flax seeds
  • 2 cups crushed ice

Instructions

  • Add the almonds, banana, and water in a high-speed blender. Pulse until smooth, like milk.
  • Add the baby greens. You can measure them as described above, or just fill the blender. Pulse until the greens are incorporated.
  • Zest an orange and add 1 teaspoon of the zest to your smoothie. Reserve the remaining zest to add more, depending on your taste preferences. Juice that same orange and add the juice to the smoothie. Pulse until smooth.
  • Add the carrots, apple quarters and ground flax seeds. Blend until smooth.
  • Take a taste. Do you want more orange flavor? Add a little more zest and blend for a few seconds to incorporate. See my notes below about orange zest and quantities.
  • Add the crushed ice and pulse until smooth. Pour into two tall glasses to serve.

Notes

* Personally, I like to use the zest of the entire orange. Shawn prefers less orange flavor. You can add some vanilla protein powder to reduce the intensity of the orange flavor if you'd like.
