Key Ingredients

You can find the full printable recipe, including ingredient quantities, below. But first, here are some explanations of ingredients and steps to help you make this recipe perfect every time.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need for this recipe, including substitution ideas:

  • Vegan butter — Use storebought vegan butter or make homemade vegan butter.
  • Vegan Shortening — Any vegetable shortening will work here, such as Crisco. You can substitute coconut oil.
  • Powdered Sugar — We’ll be adding powdered sugar for sweetness and texture.
  • Soy Milk — I recommend using creamy soy milk. You can substitute vegan creamer, but I don’t recommend thinner plant-based kinds of milk such as almond milk.
  • Oreo Crumbs — You can buy Oreo crumbs in the baking aisle of many grocery stores, but it’s just as easy to make it yourself. I recommend using a food processor to create fine crumbs if you hope to pipe the frosting. Otherwise, coarse-ground cookie crumbs are great when spreading it over a cake.

How to Make This Recipe

  1. Cream the vegan butter and shortening together until fluffy.
  2. Add the powdered sugar, one cup a time, mixing in between each addition.
  3. Then add milk, one tablespoon at a time, mixing in between each addition, to create a smooth, spreadable frosting.
  4. Add the cookie crumbs and mix in short bursts until just combined.
A stand mixer shows Oreo frosting in a whisk attachment and in the mixing bowl below it.
  5. Spread over cakes, cupcakes, donuts, and more.

Frequently-Asked Questions

Why use butter and shortening in frosting?

Butter adds the right flavor and shortening adds a stiffer texture. In addition, shortening has a higher melter point, meaning that it won’t melt on hotter days or when handled in a piping bag.

How do you unfreeze frosting?

Transfer frozen frosting to the fridge overnight to give it time to thaw. Alternatively, you can leave it out at room temperature for several hours. It may be necessary to re-whip frozen frosting once it gets to room temperature.
