Is there anything better than chocolate during the holidays? I love serving festive treats like chocolate-covered peanut butter balls or even dark-chocolate-covered pretzels. They’re easy to make, beautiful, and everyone loves them!

That means these engine chocolate-covered strawberries are right up my alley. Not only are they delicious, but they’re just so adorable!

Key Ingredients

You can find the full printable recipe, including ingredient quantities, below. But first, here are some explanations of ingredients and steps to help you make this recipe perfect every time.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need for this recipe, including substitution ideas:

  • Strawberries — You’ll need a pint of fresh strawberries (with stems). There should be around 12 strawberries or so in a pint.
  • Chocolate — 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Coconut oil — 1 teaspoon coconut oil
  • Candies —  You’ll need around 30 candy eyes. I used my homemade egg-free candy eyes.
  • Confetti sprinkles —  I used orange confetti sprinkles. Sometimes I used two, and sometimes I used only one. It works either way. You can also substitute orange Skittles cut in half.

How to Make Strawberry Penguins

  1. Wash strawberries and pat dry.
  2. Level the strawberries — You want them to be able to stand on their stem end. Place each strawberry on a plate and lightly press it to create a solid base. If it is too rounded on the bottom, you’ll either need to serve it on a stick or use a different strawberry.
  3. Melt the chocolate with coconut oil.
  4. Fill a bowl with beans or rice.
  5. Insert a long toothpick or craft stick into the stem end of the strawberry.
  6. Dip the strawberry diagonally on one side and then the other.
  7. While the chocolate is soft, add two candy eyes and one or two orange candy sprinkles for a nose.
  8. Insert the craft stick or long toothpick into the bowl with the rice to hold the penguin upright until the chocolate sets.
  9. Repeat with the remaining strawberries.

Tips for Dipping Strawberries in Chocolate

It’s pretty easy to dip strawberries in chocolate, but if you’re new to it, here are my tips to make the dipping go smooth:

  • Select Fresh Strawberries: Choose ripe, firm strawberries for the best results. Frozen strawberries will not work.
  • Dry Thoroughly: Ensure strawberries are completely dry before dipping to help the chocolate adhere.
  • Setting: Allow dipped strawberries to set at room temperature for a glossy finish or you can speed up that process in the fridge.

Storage Tips

Store chocolate strawberry penguins in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 or 4 days. Not recommended for freezing.

  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 32 candy eyes
  • 16 orange candy sprinkles (substitute orange skittles cut in half)

Instructions

  • Wash and dry strawberries with stems.
A bunch of strawberries are drying on a plate lined with paper towels.
  • Place chocolate in a small microwave-safe bowl with coconut oil and melt in 30 second increments. Stir in between each heating. Once the chocolate is melted, stir one last time.
  • Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Gather your candy eyes and sprinkles.
  • Insert a long toothpick or craft stick into the stem end of a strawberry. This makes dipping them in chocolate easier.
  • Dip the pointed end and sides of the strawberries in dark chocolate. Make sure the back of each strawberry is covered in chocolate, too.
A hand holds a strawberry, dipping it in melted chocolate. There is a plate of strawberries and bowls of candy eyes next to the melted chocolate.

A hand holds a stick with a chocolate dipped strawberry with two candy eyes on it. There is a plate of strawberries and bowls of candies below it.
  • Insert the stick into the glass jar filled with rice. This should hold the strawberry upright as the chocolate sets.
  • Once the rice-filled glass is full, transfer it to the fridge to speed up the chocolate setting. Once the chocolate sets, transfer them to a plate for serving. Or keep them in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the fridge.

I haven’t made these yet, however I think a better name is Strawberry Robins!

    Great for Christmas!

Penguins are usually black and white whereas Robin Redbreast is brown and red!

    Just a thought.

Hey Paul! I think you’re onto something! They definitely look like robins. Crazy question, do you have robins where you’re at?
