Mummy Dog Ingredients

You can find the full printable recipe, including ingredient quantities, below. But first, here are some explanations of ingredients and steps to help you make this recipe perfect every time.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need for this recipe, including substitution ideas:

  • Crescent rolls — You’ll need an 8-oz can (8 count rolls) of crescent rolls. Believe it or not many of these canned crescent rolls are made without eggs or dairy! Check the ingredients of the can you’re buying.
  • Cheddar Slices — We’ll be using two vegan cheddar slices. If you don’t want to buy this, you can leave this ingredient out.
  • Hot dogs — I used an 8-pack of vegan hot dogs. In my grocery store, these are sold in the produce section next to the tofu. You can usually find jumbo vegan hot dogs in health food stores, but these regular size dogs were perfect for this recipe. You can also substitute plant-based brats or sausages.
  • Decorations — You can use these egg-free candy eyes, but be sure to put them on after the dogs have cooled. Otherwise, you can substitute dots of yellow mustard or pieces of black olives for eyes.

How to Make Vegan Mummy Dogs

  1. Roll out the four sheets of crescent rolls on a cutting board.
  2. Seam the perforations by pinching them together.
  3. Use a pizza cutter to cut each rectangle into 8 to 10 strips each.
  4. Slice the cheese into 8 pieces.
  5. Add a cheese piece to the back of a hot dog. Then wrap with 4 to 5 crescent roll strips.
  6. Reserve a space at the top of each dog to place candy eyes once the dogs are baked.
  7. Transfer dogs to the prepared pan (cheese side down) and bake until golden brown.
  8. Remove them from the oven, cool, and add candy eyes.
  9. For Air Fried Mummy Dogs: Add mummy dogs to an air fryer basket lined with parchment paper. Cook at 325°F for around 8 minutes, then use tongs to cook on the other side for a couple of minutes.
  10. Serve mummy dogs with bowls of ketchup and mustard or other hot dog dipping condiments.

Frequently-Asked Questions

Can mummy dogs be made in advance?

You can make a batch of mummy dog treats the day before your big party. Just cover them and refrigerate. They can be served hot or cold, but feel free to heat them up in the air fryer or toaster oven. Just be sure to only add mummy eyes right before serving.

How do you wrap a dog mummy?

Any way you wrap your hot dog with dough strips will be fine. In fact, the less perfect the wrap, the more authentically mummified your hot dog will look. Consider changing diagonal directions for a really scraggly mummy look.

Pastry Options

Not a fan of crescent rolls? Here are some great ideas for different types of dough to try:

  • Consider using canned pizza dough. Follow the same process to cut it into strips.
  • Make mummy dogs with puff pastry! Use a sheet of puff pastry and cut it into strips. I recommend a quick brush with some dairy-free egg wash before baking to help the puff pastry turn golden brown.
  • Regular canned biscuits — You can use regular canned biscuits (many of these are egg-free/dairy-free, but be sure to check the labels). Simply press each biscuit dough flat, then cut it into strips.

Serving Suggestions

Serve crescent roll mummy dogs with your favorite hot dog condiments, such as:

  • The classic ketchup and mustard are perfect to have in bowls beside a tray of mummy dogs.
  • Have a bowl of this plant-based Big Mac sauce for a real dipping sensation.
  • A bowl of relish (sweet or salty) is always welcomed with these hot dog treats.

Storage Tips

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 or 4 days. They can be frozen in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 2 months. Candy eyes will change texture upon reheating, so I suggest removing them, then reheating, then adding the eyes back.

Ingredients

  • 1 can crescent rolls (8 oz can, 8 count rolls)
  • 2 slices vegan cheddar slices
  • 8 vegan hot dogs
  • 16 vegan candy eyes (substitute dots of yellow mustard or pieces of black olives)

Instructions

  • BAKING: Preheat oven to 375°F/191°C. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Open the can of rolls and unroll the dough. You should have 4 rectangles with diagonal perforations. Pinch the perforations to seam them together.
  • Use a pizza cutter to cut each rectangle into 8 to 10 strips each.

  • Slice the cheese slices into 8 pieces.
  • Add a cheese piece to the back of a hot dog. Then wrap with 4 to 5 crescent roll strips. You can stretch the dough strips slightly, but not too much. You can wrap them in different diagonal directions for an "authentic" mummy look. Reserve space at the top of each dog to place candy eyes once the dogs are baked.

  • Transfer dogs to the prepared pan (cheese side down) and bake for 14 to 17 minutes. If the rolls start to brown too much, add a piece of foil over the pan to protect the tops from burning.

Air Fryer Mummy Dogs:

  • To cook mummy dogs in the air fryer, add a piece of parchment paper to the bottom of an air fryer basket.
  • Place the prepared mummy dogs (cheese side down) in an air fryer basket and cook at 325°F/163°C for 7 to 8 minutes. Use tongs to turn the dogs and cook on the other side for another couple of minutes until the dough is golden brown. Depending on the size of your air fryer basket, you may need to cook a few batches.

For Serving:

  • Remove them from the oven or air fryer and allow them to cool and add vegan candy eyes. Soft candy eyes will melt if the hot dogs are too hot, so be aware of this. Alternatively, add dots of mustard or cut pieces from black olives to make eyes.
  • Serve mummy dogs with bowls of ketchup and mustard or other hot dog dipping ingredients.
