Key Ingredients

Here are the ingredients you’ll need for this recipe, including substitution ideas:

  • Vegan butter

  • Plant-based milk
  • Vinegar — I recommend apple cider vinegar because it’s more mellow than most vinegars.
  • Cornstarch

  • Gluten-free flour — Use a high-quality 1:1 baking flour.
  • Baking powder

Frequently-Asked Questions

Do vegan brownies contain gluten?

A typical vegan brownie recipe is made with all-purpose flour, which is not gluten-free. The only way to make your vegan brownies gluten-free is to use gluten-free flour along with other ingredients to make them chewy and delicious.

Is Betty Crocker Gluten-Free Brownie mix vegan?

Many Betty Crocker baking mixes are referred to as “accidentally vegan.” That means they’re made without dairy or eggs. To make a gluten-free brownie mix vegan, use an egg substitute (such as a flax egg, JustEgg, or applesauce).

There are approximately 315 calories per slice, depending on how large you make your slices.

Hi! Can arrowroot starch or tapioca starch be used instead of cornstarch? If so, how much? I can’t have corn products. Thank you!

Can these be made with regular all purpose flour?

Hi Jeanette! I usually talk about gluten-free substitutions with my all-purpose flour recipe, but didn’t think about all-purpose flour as a substitution for this recipe. I’m sure it would work. Or if you’d like, you can try my vegan brownies recipe (it receives rave reviews from everyone who tries it, vegan or not vegan!).
