Key Ingredients

Ingredients are laid out on a white table. The labels next to them read, vinegar, vegan mayo, brown mustard, yellow mustard, vegan honey, sea salt, and black pepper.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need for this recipe, including substitution ideas:

  • Vegan Mayo — Use vegan mayo. Don’t have vegan mayo? See below for how to substitute olive oil.
  • Mustard — You can use only one, but I like combining yellow and brown mustard.
  • Vinegar — Here, we’ll use white wine vinegar, but you can substitute apple cider vinegar.
  • Honey — Use your favorite syrup, such as agave nectar or maple syrup, or use this tasty bee-friendly vegan honey
  • Salt & Pepper — I like stirring in a bit of sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to the finished dressing.

Making Honey Mustard Without Mayo

First of all we are making honey mustard without honey. At least not the regular kind of honey. But what about mayo? If you don’t have any vegan mayo handy, what should you do? You can make it with olive oil. Here’s how.

  1. Stir together both mustards, vinegar, honey, salt, and pepper.
  2. Whisk in a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil.
  3. Repeat this until you’ve added up to 3 tablespoons of olive oil and whisk until creamy.

Vegan Honey Mustard Dressing Without Oil

Maybe you prefer your dressing oil-free. I get you! It’s easy to do. Here’s how:

Substitute the vegan mayo for a dairy-free yogurt. I prefer using plain, unsweetened yogurt, such as Forester’s Cashew Yogurt. It’s a great mayo substitute!

Store this dressing in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week. I don’t recommend freezing this dressing because the mayo can separate upon thawing.

Notes

To substitute olive oil, use extra virgin olive oil for the best flavor. Leave out the mayo and combine the mustards, vinegar, honey, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Stir this all together. Then, gradually whisk in 1 to 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Continue whisking until a light texture is achieved.
