Let’s be honest…pigs in a blanket are the life of the party. That flaky, golden pastry wrapped around a warm, savory center hits every comfort-food note. But what if you could enjoy that same nostalgic flavor with a plant-based twist? These vegan pigs in a blanket are every bit as fun and craveable as the original, just made smarter…and entirely vegan.

As someone who loves turning traditional favorites into plant-powered treats, this recipe checks all the boxes for me: easy prep, crowd-pleasing flavor, and a little nutritional upgrade that makes every bite even better.

Ingredients & Substitutions

You can find the full printable recipe, including ingredient quantities, below. But first, here are some explanations of ingredients and steps to help you make this recipe perfect every time.

  • Vegan Hot Dogs: Look for jumbo vegan hot dogs from brands like Lightlife, Field Roast, or Beyond. They have great texture and flavor. For an even lighter option, try my carrot dogs recipe…so you can turn it into vegan pigs in a blanket carrots for a low-fat, whole-food spin.
  • Crescent Rolls: Most store-bought crescent rolls (like Pillsbury) are accidentally vegan! Check the label to be sure. For a flakier result, you can also use puff pastry — it creates that classic bakery-style buttery bite.
  • Plant-Based Milk: Any non-dairy milk works here — soy, oat, or almond. This adds shine to the pastry tops instead of an egg wash.
  • Seasonings: A sprinkle of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, everything bagel seasoning, or flaky sea salt takes these to the next level.
  • Dipping Sauces: You can’t go wrong with ketchup and mustard, but I also love a creamy vegan cheese sauce or a nice garlic aioli to dress things up.

How to Make Vegan Pigs in a Blanket

When I first started making vegan pigs in a blanket, I had no idea they’d become such a hit. These little bites are nostalgic, comforting, and always disappear fast, especially when I serve them warm with a side of vegan queso or vegan honey mustard dip.

The best part? They’re so easy to make, you can whip them up in about 20 minutes.

Step 1: Choose Your Vegan Hot Dogs

Start with your favorite plant-based hot dogs or mini sausages. I’ve tested several brands, and they all work great, so use whatever you love. If you want to make them bite-sized, cut each one in half or even thirds. I like the smaller version because it’s perfect for parties or snacking.

Step 2: Wrap Them Up

Next comes the fun part…wrapping! I use store-bought crescent roll dough because it’s flaky, golden, and usually vegan-friendly (just double-check the label).

Unroll the dough and cut each triangle into smaller strips. Then, wrap one strip around each sausage piece, tucking the end underneath so it stays snug while baking.

Step 3: Brush and Bake

For that gorgeous golden finish, I brush the tops with a little dairy-free milk mixed with maple syrup. This gives them a subtle sheen and a hint of sweetness. Pop them in a preheated oven at 375°F and bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until they’re puffed and perfectly browned.

Step 4: Serve and Enjoy

Once they come out of the oven, try to resist eating them all right away (I struggle with this every single time). Let them cool slightly, then serve with your favorite dips. These are crowd-pleasers whether it’s game day, a holiday get-together, or a cozy night in.

If you have leftovers (which is rare!) they reheat beautifully in the air fryer or oven. Just warm them up for a few minutes until crispy again. Trust me, they’re just as good the next day… if they last that long.

Tips & Hacks

  • Use an air fryer for fast prep — it gives a super-crisp crust in less time.
  • Want a cheesy twist? Add a thin slice of vegan cheese over the hot dog before rolling.
  • Hosting a crowd? Double the batch and keep extras warm in a 200°F oven until serving time.
  • Brush with a mix of maple syrup and plant milk for a subtle golden sweetness.
  • Make it mini! Cut the dough smaller for bite-sized appetizers that bake in under 10 minutes.

Recipe Test Kitchen

During testing, I tried several variations — and learned a few key tricks along the way:

  • Pastry Type Matters: Crescent rolls bake up softer, while puff pastry gives that classic, flaky bakery texture. I preferred puff pastry for presentation but crescent rolls for that nostalgic “classic” feel and ease.
  • Roll With It: I like placing the hot dog on the fat end of the triangle and rolling up so the tip ends at the top. It creates more edges that can turn golden in the oven. But I recommend experimenting to see what works best for you!
  • Carrot Dog Variation: Swapping vegan dogs for roasted carrot dogs makes these lighter. I brushed the carrots with a touch of liquid smoke and soy sauce. Huge flavor payoff!
  • Baking Time: At 400°F, 14 minutes was my sweet spot for even browning. You can bump it up to 415F for a few minutes if your pastry isn’t browning.

Each tweak brought me closer to the perfect flaky-meets-savory bite that now defines this recipe.

Storage Tips

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer to restore crispness (avoid microwaving — it makes the dough soft).

For longer storage, freeze unbaked wraps on a tray until firm, then transfer to a freezer bag. Bake from frozen, adding 3–5 minutes to the cook time.

Frequently-Asked Questions

Can I make these gluten-free?

Yes! Use a gluten-free puff pastry (like Schär) or gluten-free crescent dough. Many vegan hot dog brands are not gluten-free, but you can substitute plant-based carrot dogs.

What’s the best way to make them ahead?

Wrap them up, freeze on a baking sheet, and bake directly from frozen when ready.

Can I use homemade dough?

Absolutely — just roll your dough thin so it bakes evenly.

Are they healthy?

Compared to traditional sausage versions, these are lower in calories and contain less omega-6 fat — especially if you use carrot dogs or a low-oil vegan hot dog.

Where can I get vegan hotdogs?

    • Avatar thumbnail image for MarlyMarly

Hi Mel! You can find veggie hot dogs at health food stores like Sprouts. I usually find them in the refrigerated section next to the dairy and the tofu. Some major grocery stores will have them in their refrigerated health food section. My favorites are LightLife Jumbo Smart Dogs and Field Roast Stadium Dogs. Amazon also sells them via Whole Foods. I hope this is helpful!
